Clinico-epidemiological study of leprosy in a tertiary care hospital of Eastern India

Background: Accurate diagnosis of leprosy is paramount importance, because delays and misdiagnosis are more common in non-endemic zones. It has a long incubation period, varied clinical presentations, reaction states which can present any point lifetime, becoming challenging for proper management this enigmatous disease. Methods: This was conducted as an institution based cross- sectional study over period 12 months. 100 patients were selected. Inclusion exclusion criteria maintained. Data collected checked, tabulated, statistically analysed compared with existing literature. Results: In our study, majority, 49% belonged age group 41-60 yrs, only 6% less than 20 years old. Male: female ratio 3.34. 62% from rural areas. Family history Hansen 5%. had Histoid while 5% pure neuritic representing least subtypes. Most occupations Housewives (19%), shopkeepers (16%) office workers (16%). 59% presented hypoesthesia, 28% fever. to borderline, 27% polar spectrum. Trophic ulcers found 20%, clawing digits 27%. Conclusions: Leprosy still pressing problem country. A considerable number children adolescents get affected indicating high rate transmission community. comprehensive approach includes diagnosis, treatment, identification patterns, prevention disability deformities, implementation rehabilitation measures.
